WELLESLEY COLLEGE

Presentation of Prizes Annual ceremoi<y The whole of the seating accommodation of the Masonic Hall was occupied last evening for the annual presentation of prizes in connection with Wellesley. College. Mr. O. A. L. Treadwell, president of the Parents’ Association, who occupied the chair, said., there were two facts which he wished to Impress upon parents. One was the unqualified progress the school was making, and that even in these trying times of “cuts and the depression the number on the roll was greater at the end of the year than it was at the beginning. The other fact was that parents were beginning to make inquiries about the coming year. This was all the best of evidence that the standard of the teaching and the conduct Of the school was highly satisfactory. It was. the prerogative of the parents to make any kind of helpful criticism, but he had to confess, that he had found nothing he could criticise adversely. In the upper school every boy, save one, had gained his proficiency certificate, and that one had not failed, for he had gained a competency certificate. Even some of the boys of the fifth standard had been encouraged to try for certificates, and three of them had gained proficiency and three competency certificates, which . spoke volumes for the admirable teaching and control of . the 8° Mr? ■ Treadwell specially thanked ■ Canon'Percival James for his hearty co-operation, in attending to the spiritual welfare of the boys. This, was a time when such guidance, not alone for school boys, was perhaps more needed than ever, and on behalf of the Parents’ Association he thanked Canon James for his active interest. Changes in the staff were not always to be. desired, but there would be some changes next year which would make for a still greater improvement in the school. Mr. W. TT Stevens, headmaster,-did not make any formal report, as he held that the presentation of prizes should be an occasion of joy rather than one for pedagogical discussion. The remarks of Canon James, who presented the.prizes, are reported elsewhere. The ceremony was preceded by an amusing performance of “The Man in the Bowler Hat” (A. A. Milne), and some chorus singing by the juniors. The list of prize winners.is as follows:— Standard 2.—Alton Angel, 1; John-Stout, 2 Mrs. Cable’s’.Progress Prize, William Freeman.
