HOLIDAY’ AT FOXTON

.1 > I I district, is a popular beach and holiday resort for Palmerston North. Situated near the mouth of the Manawatu Iliver, the port played an important part in the early development and colonisation of the district, and for many years was the only outlet for the district’s produce. The township is situated several miles up the river and is the centre of a farming and industrial area. A considerable amount of shipping still used the port, but the town suffered.a setback when the Wellington-Mana-watu railway line was opened. The township is a progressive borough of approximately 2000 inhabitants and is well equipped with reserves and playing fields. One of the district’s major industries for many years was the cultivation of flax and the manufacture of hemp

This industry ''’flourished for many years but several years ago many of the factories were unable to carry on under the prevailing conditions. With the assistance of subsidies from the V -employment Board, the industry was re-opened and many of the factories which were forced to close down are operating again. The industry has received a further stimulus of recent months by the opening of a large wool and textile factory for the manufacture of wool packs, sacks and other articles from the hemp. 1
