Charles Laughton Returns to England

TpOR a nominal salary, reported to be x £5 a week and living expenses, Charles Laughton will turn his back on Hollywood and a screen contract . running into four figures weekly to return to London and participate in a novel theatrical.venture. Laughton is one of a group of eight who have banded together as a stock company, to produce classical plays in London during the winter. They will defray the cost of production, costumes and settings themselves, and enact the roles. Laughton will depart on completion of his role opposite Carole Lombard in “White Woman.” He will return to Hollywood in April. Laughton and his London theatre group will produce and act in “The Tempest.” “Twelfth Night,” “Macbeth.” “Measure for Measure,” “Henry VIII,” “The Rivals,” “The Importance of Being Earnest,” and "Orchard.” • With the Byrd Expedition TWO Paramount newsreel camerax men are with Rear-Admiral R. E. Byrd on his Antractic expedition. The men are John Herrmann and Carl Peterson. It has been arranged that one of the cameramen will be with Byrd in the plane which will explore sections of the unknown portion of Antarctica, the other travelling with the various land parties. The film will be sent back in carefully planned relays to the Byrd supply ship, which is to have its base port in New Zealand. From the Dominion the picture will be forwarded to the Paramount studios in Hollywood, and from there prints will be made available to theatres throughout the world. It is the intention of the newsreel men not only to make thrilling pictorial shots for inclusion in the Paramount sound newsreels, but also to photograph material which will aid international scientists in accurately mapping the Antarctic Continent. The scenes filmed will be released in New Zealand by Paramount Film Service (N.Z.) Limited. It will be remembered that Rear-Admiral Byrd’s previous voyage to the South Polar regions was also filmed by Paramountand was shown in the Dominion as a full-length feature, entitled “With Byrd at the South Bole.”
