Christmas Relief
Sir, —With regard to the question of Christmas relief for unemployed, referred to in a recent issue of your valuable paper, it was stated that all the unemployed would receive the same allocation as last Christmas, viz., two weeks pay over the holiday period, without being asked to work. Unfortunately, our stand-down week begins Christmas week, and I learn we will only receive one week’s pay; that is, the first week in the new year. I fail to see where all the unemployed in the Dominion will receive two weeks’ pay at Christmas. —I am, etc., v EX-SERVICEMAN.
Paekakariki, Dec. 12, 1933. [The Unemployment Board advises that provision for payment without work to relief workers who ordinarily- would be employed during the weeks ending December 30 and January 6is framed on the same general principle as the holiday pay arrangement of a year ago.]
