PRIZE-GIVING

Wellington College

ANNUAL , CEREMONY

HELD

Their Excellencies Attend

Prizes won during the year by boys of Wellington College were presented in the Memorial Hall last evening bj their Excellencies-the Governor-Gener-al and Lady Bledisloe. On the platform with them were Mr. G. Mitchell, chairman of the board of governors, t-ie Chief Justice, Sir Michael Myers, and Lady Myers, the headmaster, Mr. .W. A. Armour, and other members of the board and of the teaching staff. Special Navy League prizes were presented by Mr. R. Darroch.

In his opening remarks, Mr. Mitchell, who presided, made a plea for the cultivation and occupation of idle lands not only in New Zealand but in other parts of the Empire. It was essential that this should be done,’ he considered, for defensive as well as economic reasons. There was danger that the ease which people were enjoying might make them forget that all they had, they had to fight for. If people did not support the • Empire fully, then the Empire could not continue to support them at a standard of living that was higher, than anywhere else in the world. Boys had to realise that there was enough soil idle in New Zealand to give them a Jiving and that in Australia there was enough to absorb all the surplus population of the Empire. The headmaster, Mr. W. A. Armour, surveyed various aspects of his annual report and stressed the need for eliminating from the curricula much that was no longer truly educational. He mentioned in particular the desirability of a wider study of geography m the upper forms and for the introduction o£ general biology in the science teaching. Thirty per cent, of the secondary school pupils throughout New Zealand took Latin as one ot their subjects. . At Wellington College the percentage 'was 56 per cent., but it was a noteworthy fact that the number would decline and decline rapidly if the present methods of teaching continued. What was wanted was a linking-up of the language with the study of the actual life of the Roman people. , Their Excellencies, who were greeted with prolonged applause, then presented the prizes to the successful scholars. After the presentation. Mr. W. H. P. Barber thanked their Excellencies for their attendance, and Mr P. Denton proposed a vote of thanks to the principal and staff of the college.
