DELEGATE TO CAIRO

Secretary of Post Office FAREWELL GATHERING ’ The regard in which the secretary of the Post and Telegraph Department, Mr. G. Macnamara, is held, was evidenced by the attendance of some 300 officers of the department who assembled yesterday to wish him well on the eve bf his departure as the delegate of the New Zealand Government to the International Postal Union conference, which is to open at Cairo early in February. The Postmaster-General, Hon. A. Hamilton, spoke highly of the administrative ability Mr. Macnamara had shown as head of the department, and said he felt sure that -he would do credit to the Dominion abroad. On behalf* of the’ officers of the department, the Minister asked Mr. Macnamara to accept a New Zealand rug for himself, and a blouse case for Mrs. Macnamara. Succeeding speakers said that although it was easy for the head of a big organisation to be popular in prosperous times, it was a striking tribute to Mr. Macnamara that to-day he held the respect' and esteem of every member of the department.

Mr. Macnamara briefly responded. Earlier in the day, the secretary of the P. and T. Department was presented with a case of pipes for himself and a gift for Mrs. Macnamara from the P. and T. Pastimes Club. Mr. Macnamara will leave for Cairo by the Monowai to-morrow. During his absence, Mr. J. Robertson, first assistant secretary, will act as head of the department.
