Main Highways Fund
Sir, —Your leading article in yesterday's issue attracted my attention and in one particular aroused my ire. With reference to the unjustifiable “raid” on the Main Highways Fund, you stated that “the contributors realised, not without disappointment and misgivings, that the circumstances justified the proceeding.” My point of view, as one of the contributors, is representative of all motorists of my acquaintance and of the Automobile Clubs, which offer ■ the only representative public expression of opinion, and what foundation you can have for your statement is beyond my comprehension. I concede the “disappointment and misgivings,” but certainly not the “realisation.” I am a solicitor by profession, and if on finding that the trust funds held for the general body of my clients were insufficient to meet their commitments, I selected one section of my clients and used their personal trust funds to repair the general deficiency, I should be deprived, not only of my right to continue to practise, but also of my liberty. I leave you to draw the inference.—l am. etc.. “ONE OF THE CONTRIBUTORS.” December 12.
