Fruit Machines Used Illegally The illegal use of fruit machines resulted in Charles Frederick Amory, aged 44 years, billiard saloon keepef; Lebridfd PdrZdval Duncan, tiged ( 82 years, painter; and Cyril Clandge ertch being -fined £lO by Mr. E. Amory was charged with using the Lambton Billiard Saloon in Lambton Quay as a common gaming house, Duncan with using the Paramount Billiard Saloon in Courtenay Place as a common gaming house, and Claridge rtith using a tobacconist’s shop in Manners Street' as a common gaming hdiise. Eddli pleaded guilty and was allowed tlriie to pay. The qiibstioii of whether the machines should be forfeited Was reserved in each case iifitil Tuesday next. A. charge against Albert Edward Duncan, aged 44 years, painter and showman, in /which ho was alleged to have used the Artcraft Billiard Saloon in Molesworth Street ak a common gaming house, was adjourned for,one wrick ofi the application of Mr. H. Tay-Detective-Sergeant Revell said that tlid machines Ifad been imported by arid confectioners and used for selling small quantities of fruit. Gradually they had come to be lifted for gambling, and last year, following a raid, several convictions had been entered against the users of them. The Supreme Court on appeal had decided that the machines were gambling machines.
