The first day’s play in the Hawke Cup match saw Nelson, the holders, with a substantial first innings lead over Marlborough, the challengers. The latter, in the first innings, made 158 (M. Neal 19, Hastilow 44, A. Neale 30, O’Sullivan 18). Newman took four wickets for 42, and Freeman three for 38. At stumps Nelson had made 296 for seven wickets (Kinzett not out 160, Neale 15, A. Newman 54, McGirr 27). SCHOOL CRICKET Croydon beats Wellesley A cricket match between Croydon School and Wellesley College elevens, played on the Croydon School ground on IVednesday, resulted in a victory for Croydon School by an innings and 43 runs. Croydon totalled 159 (R. Kemball 46. R. Whatley 45. J. Brice 23, B. Neligan 20), while Wellesley were dismissed for 57 and, 59.
