Australia’s Future Capital

The Federal House of Representatives has passed the Capital Site Bill, giving effect to the Ynss-Canberra selection, through the comuiittee stages.

In connection with the jubilee of the Emperof of Francis Joseph, extensive illuminations are in progress in Vienna. Three crowds converging, a panic ensued, and sixty persons were injured in the crush. One deputy of the Reichsrath and a woman were crushed to death.

The House of Lords passed the Children’s Bill, after introducing from the dead Licensing Bill a clause prohibiting children from entering the bar of licensed premises.

A Reuter’s telegram states that when the Dowager Empress of Russia (sister to the Queen of England) was returning from Copenhagen (her brother’s capital) on November 20. an attempt was made at Ponevyesh (on the Libau-Dunsburg railway) to derail the train. Awotin. a Lett (inhabitant of the Russian Baltic provinces), has been arretsed, and is charged with the offence.

During the last few months many parents have been fined at Prahran (a suburb of Melbourne) for failing to send their children to school. Some fathers who are unable to pay the fines have made arrangements with the police whereby to spend their week-ends in gaol, thereby obviating loss of employment.
