SAFETY IN FLYING

Chain of Landing Grounds

N.Z. AERO CLUB COMMENT

Reference is made in the annual report of the New Zealand Aero Club, presented at the annual meeting yesterday, to the formulation of a scheme for the provision of emergency landing grounds within gliding distance of one another along the main air routes throughout New Zealand. The importance of the provision of a chain of safe landing grounds, suitably spaced, Was too obvious, from the point of view of public safety, to require comment, the report stated, and the club was gratified at the excellent reception its scheme had at the hands of the Minister and his officers.

“The scheme, which was originally suggested by the Canterbury club, was approved by this club, and, with some amendments, submitted by it to the Government, which has adopted it and provided £5OOO for a preliminary survey and works with a view to putting tlie scheme into immediate effect,” the report stated. “The scheme calls for the co-operation of landowners having suitable landings teas, the aero clubs in locating and submiting these, the Defence Department in inspecting and approving them, the Public Works Department in surveying and laying them out, and the Unemployment Board in providing the necessary labour. “The total cost of forming the landing grounds will, of course, be much more than £5OOO, bub that sum will enable a commencement to be made with the location, inspection, and survey of suitable areas, and possibly with, the actual formation work in immediately accessible localities.”
