Mr. P. J. O’Regan returned yesterday from a visit to Waihi. Mr. and Mrs. J. R. McKenzie are leaving at the end of this month on a trip to England. Mr. George Ellwood, the accomplished ’cellist, and Mrs. Ellwood, have booked passages to England by the Rotorua, leaving on December 15.

Scott, of the Napier courthouse staff, has received notice of his transfer to Nelson, to take effect from January next. Mr. Scott is honorary secretory of the Waimarama Golf Chib. Mr. A. Matsudaira, Japanese merchant from Nagoya and Kobe, left for Rotorua and Auckland yesterday morning, accompanied by Mr. Alan Herman, his representative in New Zealand. Ilis Grace tlie Archbishop of New Zealand has appointed the Rev. E. JI. Cowie, M.A., vicar of Khandallah in tbe Diocese of Wellington, to be his commissary for the purpose of calling and presiding at the Synod of the Diocese of Nelson, which will elect a successor to the present bishop, who will retire next year. The Rev. E. M. Cowie is a son of the late Bishop Cowie, of Auckland, who was Primate from 1893 to 1902. He was vicar of Hamilton from 1908 to 1926, and Archdeacon from 1913 to 1929. It is proposed to call the special session for the election of a bishop for Thursday, December 14. Mr. Cowie has issued a letter to the clerical and lay members of the Synod calling them to meet for a quiet' day of prayer and devotion on Wednesday, December 13, as a spiritual preparation for the important work for which the Synod is being assembled.
