Association Activities The annual report of the United Kingdom Manufacturers and New Zealand Representatives’ Association states that the membership consists of 104 United Kingdom members and 113 New Zealand members. The, council places on record its great appreciation of the very valuable work which Mr. L. Ashcroft Edwards. immediate past president, performed for members during his tenure of office. Mr. Edwards, the report states, was untiring- in his efforts to promote United Kingdom trade in the Dominion.
"The association, with other organisations.” the report continues, “used every effort to prevent an increase in the exchange rates, but. unfortunately, iu the face of very strong protests, an arbitrary increase to 25 per cent, was made.” The Auckland branch had functioned most successfully during the year, and had performed very useful work for the association. The council was pursuing inquiries as to the possibilities of creating further interest in the activities of the association at Christchurch, where the scope for membership was somewhat limited. During the year a conference was held with the chairmen of the Auckland and Christchurch branches,, when matters of interest affecting the branches were discussed. ' The most important work of the association during the year was in connection with the commission set up by the New Zealand Government as a result of the Ottawa Conference, which commenced its sittings in Wellington in June, and the association’s case was submitted on July 3 by Messrs. G. O. Sutton and N. H. Russell, who were appointed to handle it for'‘the association. Individual members also gave evidence on the lines in which they were interosled. A statement was sent to all members, and it was proposed, if possible, when the commission's report was made, to circulate a summary.
