RAID AND CAPTURE

Exciting Lorry Chase

An exciting lorry chase, when " two

men tried to capture two others suspected of the Battersea hold-up and shooting affray, was described at the South-Western Police Court, London. Stephen Gerrard Tormey (30), described as a private commissionaire, of Trollope Street, Battersea, and David Sellars Baird (23). a seaman, of no fixed address, are charged with being concerned together in snooting I* rank Arthur James Fisk, of M hitehouse Greenlane. Battersea, with intent to murder him. Fisk was wounded by a revolver bullet when he attempted to prevent the escape of two men who. it was alleged had been concerned in an attempted hold-up of Mr. Eason, .an estate manager. at his office in St. Philip Street. Battersea

Mr. Vincent Evans, prosecuting, after describing the attempted hold-up at pistol point in Mr. Eason’s office, and the subsequent shooting of Fisk, said: “The two prisoners, seeing a lorry driven by a man named Holloway, jumped on to it. ami one of them told

the driver that a. ‘copper’ was after them.

“The driver tried to apply his brakes, but Tormey produced a pistol, and. pointing it at the driver, said to him: ’Go on as fast as yon can.’ The driver felt he bad no option and drove on. “Meanwhile two men who had seen the chase and followed the prisoners jumped on to the back of the lorry. They were seen by the accused through the window at rhe back of the lorry, and one of them —Tormey, I think—broke the glass, pushed his pistol through, and threatened the two men with it.

“The two men then crept back to the end of the lorry and hung down behind the tailboard. When the lorry slowed down the prisoner Baird jumped off and came round to the back of the lorry, and was seen to have a pistol in his hand. “Fortunately, the two men on the lorry had seen him coming and were able to dodge behind another vehicle. “As the lorry passed a bus the two prisoners jumped off and exit on the bus ”
