TROTTING NOTES Events at Ashburton REVIEW OF THE FORM (By “Overcheck.”) Two races for pacers are included in to-day’s programme of the Ashburton County Racing Club, these being the Melrose Trot Handicap, of one mile and a half, and the Mayfield Trot Handicap, of two miles. MELROSE TROT HANDICAP, of £9O. 3.45 class. One mile and a-half. Attorney ... scr Real Burton .. scr Chudlc .... scr Red Gold .. scr Colleen Rowal .... scr Chenault .. scr Satin Lass .. scr Golden Dollar , scr Vanity Fair scr Happy Bird ..scr Waving Corn . scr Irish Peach .. scr Young Travis . scr Modern Lady . scr Eiffelton Lass . 12 Peter Parrish . scr Elvo 36 Playwright . scr El Merit (T.) .. 96 On public form those with the best prospects in the Melrose Handicap appear to be Modern Lady, Peter Parrish, Real Burton, Vanity Fair, and Elvo. Modern Lady ran second to Guy Junior at Greymouth in October, registering 3.29 2-5, while Peter Parrish was third to Admiral Wrack and Compass in two races over a mile in 2.1 S 2-5 and 2.17 3-5. Real Burton ran third to Garry Thorpe and Elvo at South Canterbury, the latter going 3.25 and Real Burton 3.25 3-s.'Elvo was later in the day successful over 1£ miles run in 2.49 4-5. Vanity Fair’s best effort was her second to Marie Celeste at Ashburton in September, when she went 3.27 2-5. Elvo was fourth in this race. On the whole the three that may be best supported are Vanity Fair, Modern Lady, and Real Burton. MAYFIELD TROT HANDICAP, of £9O. 4.59 class.' Two miles. Athelney Lass . scr Royal Audo .. scr Colcne Parrish scr Tollgate .. scr Elvo scr Young' Travis . scr Garry Thorpe . scr Grand Author . 24 Mabel Chimes . scr Jimmy de Oro . 24 Paul Drusus .. scr Preface .... 24 . Red Gold .... scr Recess .... 48 Silver White Stranger 72 Axworthy scr El Merit (T.) .. 96 In the Mayfield Trot Handicap the distance may find out most of the runners, and I am inclined to look to the backmarkers to provide the winner, particularly Grand Author, Jimmy de Oro. and Recess. The first-named won at North Canterbury over 12 furlongs in 3.28 1-5, and was second to War Path at the Banks Peninsula meeting in 3.29. Jimmy de Oro was second in the first of these two races when conceding 60 yards, but was only fourth in the second at a difference of but 12 yards. At Forbury last Saturday Jimmy de Oro was third to Summit and Agile, in which race he registered 3.21 4-5. Recess has had only two outings this season, in the first of which she was second, registering 3.25 3-5, while in the second race she was third to General Wrack and Marie Celeste, going 3.24 4-5. She invariably races solidly, and on this account may receive most support. Grand Author and Jimmy de Oro may, however, be the favourites. Wairarapa Meeting. Owners and trainers are reminded that nominations for the Wairarapa club’s meeting on December 26 and 27 close with the secretary, Carterton, on Wednesday, December 13, at 9 p.m.
