Red Cross activities are most spectacular during war time, their work in peace is, as the Duke of York, the chairman of the council of the society, has pointed out "equally important.” The various Red Cross organisations—the movement is. of course, international —have taken a leading part in fighting famine and epidemic disease. It was a Swiss, Henri Dunant, who was the founder of the Red Cross movement, but some years before he had helped to succour the wounded at Solferino, Florence Nightingale had been the means of saving thousands of'lives by her devoted work in the Crimea. She was the first to see —and respond to—the need out of which the Red Cross organisation has grown.
