At the end of the first day’s play in the England-Australia lawn tennis test series, Australia is leading by tlnee rubbers, seven sets, and sixty-five games, to one rubber, five sets, and fifty-one games. Results are as follow:— Singles. Quist (Australia) defeated ilde (England), 4-6, 6-1, 6-3. McGrath (Australia) defeated Hughes (England), 6-2, 6-2. Hopman (Australia) defeated Lee (England). 4-6, 6-1, 7-5. Doubles.. Perry and Wilde (England) defeated Crawford and McGrath (Australia), 10-8, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. The best match of the day was Hopman v. Lee. The Englishman attacked strongiv and won the first set, not allowing the Australian to come to the net. Hopman improved in the second set, while Lee lost touch. . _ The deciding set was most exciting. Loe raced to a 5-0 lean by' means ot strong driving and serving. Hopman then retrieved brilliantly to avert a love set defeat. Lee had match points at 5-1, and 40-0, but Hopman, playing inspired tennis, carried the score to 5all Lee again had match points at 5-4 and 40-15, and amid tremendous excitement Hopman went on to win the set and the match. McGrath easily accounted for Hughes, who employed a heavy cut on his drives. McGrath’s forehand improved. and his backhand was working perfectly, repeatedly leaving Hughes standing. The Quist-Wilde encounter was a poor exhibition, both making frequent errors. Quist, won because of his ability to come to the net and volley for winners.

The doubles match was also a poor exhibition. Crawford failed on all shots, netting and outing with monotonous regularity. Perry dominated the play at the net, while Wilde’s overhead work and volleying were'very good. McGrath again gave a fine exhibition, but Crawford's form was too bad to enable the Australians to win.
