BLACK HARD-PRESSED

Young’s Uphill Fight

THREE HOLES IN A ROW

Dominion Special Service.

Auckland, October 13.

Black played patchily a.t some of the holes oh the way out, but accurate long putting saved him in a number of instances. His driving, however, was inclined to be erratic. On the other hand, Y’oung played his long game very soundly, but missed opportunities on the greens. Black was out in 36, when he stood 4 up. He played the tenth and thirteenth badly on the way back, but he held an advantage of two strokes at the conclusion of the round. It was still anybody’s game as Young had retrieved his position so much over the last nine holes. A feature of his return was the manner in which he retrieved from a bunker at “Redan,” and left himself a three-foot putt. The gallery gasped when Black holed his three at the twenty-sixth, a feat Young almost repeated, his ball lipping the cup. Young’s position when 3 down at the twenty-ninth looked desperate, as it did not appear possible to retrieve such a deficit in seven holes from one of Black’s calibre. The glorious uncertainty of the game, however, was never better empha-' sised than when Young took the thirtieth with a birdie 4, “Wrecker” as a gift and* the short thirty-second in a birdie 2. The players were all square going to “Temptation” and the gallery was now in a fever of excitement. Scores of people rushed to reach vantage points and the few officials were quite unable to exercise proper control. The game appeared to be over when Young’s second to the thirty-fifth was sliced into a bunker, Black then being dormy 2. There were gasps, however, when Black’s second struck a tree and rebounded. Critics were amazed at Black’s decision to endeavour to cut under the branches instead of playing for the open country and a half in 5. His error of judgment cost him the hole, but the final half saved him the match.
