DE LUXE THEATRE

“When Ladies Meet’’

“When Ladies Meet,” the new Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer offering at the De Luxe Theatre, is a capital comedy-drama which American ingenuity has hit upon to explode a type of bubble that is continually bringing about domestic misery. Mary (Myrna- Loy) is a young novelist who has fallen in love with her publisher, Rogers. , As he happens to be a married man with two children, Mary figures it out that she, being the really big thing in his life, should approach the wife and mother, and tell her frankly the position. Jimmie, who really loves her, very cleverly brings about a meeting between Mary and the wife, Clare (Ann Harding), and such are the disclosures of the wife (who is unknown as such to Mary), that the truth is paraded in all its splendid rectitude, and the novelist is made to see •the error of her ways. Robert. Montgomery is admirably amusing as Jimmie,, and a wealth of lively comedy is contributed bv Alice Brady as Bridget Drake, at whose delightful country home the expose is made. The programme also ineludes two gazettes, “Allez-oop, a picture displaying the feats of some amazing acrobats, and “Hollywood Premiere, depicting in technicolour the opening of a fantastically elaborate delicatessen store. Miss Iris Mason contributes a “Student Prince” selection and song specialties on the Wurlitzer organ. “Moonlight and Pretzels.” “Moonlight and Pretzels.” acclaimed by movie critics as one of the most tuneful and cleverly produced musicals ever to flash upon the screen, has been booked for an early showing at the De Luxe Theatre. I\O"er Pryor, Leo Carrillo. Mary Brian, Lillian Miles. Alexander Gray. Bernice Claire. Jack Denny and his Orchestra, Herbert Rawlinson. Doris Carson, William Frawley and the famous Frank and Milt Britton band are only a few of the east. “Moonlight and Pretzels.” a backstage romance, tells the story of George Dwight, small-time vaudeville player with ambition to be a big-time song-writer. He finds himself stranded in a small town in New York State, and Sally Upton, proprietor of the local music store helps him out with a job. Sally falls in love with him immediately, but George is too busy trying to catch on as a song-writer to think about love. He goes.to New xork and scores a tremendous hit as a composer of musical comedy successes. Although Sallv hasn’t heard from him. she feels sure that George still thinks of her and decides to come to New York to get a job in one of his shows.

“HONI SOIT” “Honi Soit” will conclude its season at the Grand Opera House to-night. One number that lifts the production above the ordinary level is the vocal scena, “La Tleve Passe,” in which Mr. Colin Crane sings a brave song in admirable fashion. The experiences of an American family on tour are told riotously in another act. in which Miss Rene Riano, Chic Arnold, and Charles Norman are extremely funny. Perhaps the most comical sketch is the two sideo of a wall in which Miss Jennie Benson and Mr. Norman figure as two neighbourly housewives busy with their washing. Words fly as well as soap-suds, the repartee being vital with innuendo. Miss Benson and Mr. Norman are also very amusing in their attempts to explain a simple sentence from a book to an inquiring Frenchman in need of a lesson in real English. Miss Benson’s songs at the piano are a feature of the entertinment. Sunday Entertainment. A special entertainment will be given by Miss Jennie Benson and the principal members of the “Bright Side Up” company in the Grand Opera House to-mor-row evening in aid of the Mayor's Relief Fund. Among those contributing will be Miss Doran, Miss Thelma Trott, and Mr. Colin Crane. Mr. Charles Norman will act as M.C. Musical items will be given by the 2YA Concert Orchestra, specially augmented under Mr. Leon de Mauny, and Mr. Owen Pritchard, and. Frank Crowther will look after the community singing. ARTCRAFT One of the most unusual films ever produced is “Strange Interlude,” which is now at the Artcraft Theatre. The film introduces “spoken thoughts,” and the audience is permitted to hear what the characters are thinking. The stars of this Eugene O’Neill play are Norma Shearer, Clark Gable, and. Bramwell Fletcher. There will be special films for children at the matinee.

KING GEORGE, LOWER HUTT
