LONDON’S FIRST TAXI DRIVER. Senior taxi-cab driver in London, and the first licensed driver of a petrol-driven vehicle, Mr. James Michael Howe, aged 65. of Hammersmith, has been presented with a badge, specially made for him on the instructions of Lord Trenchard. Chief Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police. “I have been a licensed driver for 49 years,” Mr. Howe said in an interview. “I sold my cobs and horses in 1594. and when the motor-cabs came along in 1903, I drove the first one in London, mine being the only one plying for a few months. As a hansom cab driver I drove Mr. Leopold Rothschild for 14 years.”
