Happenings About the Town

INCIDENTS, OBSERVATIONS

The Wellington Ministers’ Association has decided to send a deputation to the Education Board on tlie subject of Sunday tennis on school grounds.

The Wellington Sunday School Union lias accepted the invitation of the combined stall’s of the Levin Sunday schools to hold its Easter convention in Levin.

Co-operation with the New Zealand Alliance in an effort to have November 26 observed as Temperance Sunday was decided upon at Thursday evening’s meeting of the Wellington Sunday School Union.

Scalds to his arms and legs were suffered 'by a three-year-old child, John Mullins, whose parents live at 11 Donald McLean Street, Newtown, early last evening when he fell into a bath of boiling water. He was attended to by Dr. Usher and then removed to hospital by the Wellington Free Ambulance.

Mention is made in the annual report of the ambulance department of the St. John Ambulance Association (London), just to hand, of the good work done by centres of the association in Auckland, Wellington and Wanganui on the occasion of the disastrous earthquake in Hawke’s Bay in 1931. This example (says the report) was emulated by the Dunedin centre during the year under review (1932).

Members of the Wellington Magicians’ Society held their monthly meeting this week. A letter was received from Dante, expressing his appreciation of the welcome extended to him by the society on his recent visit to Wellington. Dante also forwarded an autographedi photograph of himself. Three members entertained with conjuring tricks, after which there was a short discussion on the art of magic. An innovation has been arranged for the November meeting, when, every member is expected to do a trick.

Returning from a visit to the Wairarapa at 1 a.m. on Sunday last, a party of Wellington citizens saw a display of the Aurora Australis. It was particularly clear while they were travelling from Masterton to Carterton, and was visible until they reached Featherston, when cloudy conditions prevailed. Only about a third of the arc was visible, showing faint green, red, and orange tints, brightest near the earth line and faintest at the top end. As there was a moon at the time, the display was less brilliant than it would otherwise have been, but still it was a very beautiful sight.

The following resolution was passed at the meeting of the New Zealand Surf Life-Saving Association recently: “That, acting in conjunction with the wish of the delegates at the 1933 conference, the New Zealand council tentatively allots the 1933-34 championships to Auckland provided that by October 20 the council shall have received the beach returns for the Auckland beaches. Failing the receipt of the returns by the date specified, the championships will be allotted to Taranaki.” The secretary stated that the only return to hand from Auckland was for the Takapuna beach. It was further decided to request the Auckland centre officially to recommend the beach for the holding of the championships and also to suggest a suitable date.
