MARKS ON CHAIRS
S.A.C-, .Wellington, writes: “How can I remove black greasy marks, on some old mahogany chairs? I have tried turpentine and paraflin, but this seems too drastic, as I am afraid of ruining the polish.”
It is a little difficult to advise without actually inspecting the polished surface. So much depends on whether the original wax polish remains or whether it has subsequently been Ji’ren.cb-polishcd or varnished. It is very likely that one or both of the latter have been applied, that being the reason why the turps and paraffin failed to remove the greasy stains. In this case such polish is not worthy of the chairs and should be removed from the backs and legs with methylated spirit brushed on with a soft brush and then lightly scrubbed with an old nail brush. This will dissolve and remove the shellac or varnish, aqd the stains should vanish with it. This method will not spoil the colour of the wood, but do not aim at making your chairs look spotlessly new. Wipe over with a rng dipped in clean spirit, and when thoroughly dry polish with wax.
