BULLER BY-ELECTION

Selection of Candidates

LABOUR REPRESENTATIVE No official indication has yet been given regarding the choice of a Labour candidate for the Buller seat, rendered vacant by the death of Mr. H. E. Holland. It is believed the issue lies between Air. P. C. Webb and Mr. Roy Holland, son of the late member. “Representatives of the party in the electorate will act in conjunction with thf national executive, which has power to make the selection,” said Mr. M. J. Savage, Leader of the Opposition, when questioned on -the subject last evening. “It is not a matter of forcing anyone on the local people. Although the Labour Party is sometimes accused of doing that, it actually has the freest constitution of all parties.” Mr. Savage said he could riot say when the selection would be made, but he pointed out that the seat had not yet been declared vacant. Meanwhile no move has been made by the Government. It has been suggested that no Government candidate will be nominated, in the event of Mr. Holland’s son being the Labour candidate, but this lacks confirmation. The sons of Mr. Seddon, Sir Joseph Ward, and Mr. Massey all won their way to the House as the result of contested elections. However, In the case of Mr. Massey, the circumstances were rather different as his son did not stand for the Franklin seat until three years after his fa tier’s death.
