STOCKS AND SHARES Good Demand Yesterday, A FIRM MARKET Very little movement in prices was seen yesterday in the Wellington stock and share market. Rates ruled firm on an active demand with no concessions from Further strengthening was recorded, in offers for Government loans, there being a complete absence of sellers. The 4 per ent. bonds, 1940, advanced to £lOl/</'■>. The 4 per cent, bonds, 1949. were quoted up to £lO2/2/6, the inscribed stock ot that maturity being 2/6 lower. Local body and other debentures were firm on an active demand. Wright, Stephensons sold at £B3, and more were wanted at £B2/10/-. Banks showed little change. New Zealands were reported done at. 48/-. and Union of Australia at £lO/1/6. In the pastoral and financial section Dalgetys advanced sharply to £lO/1 </6 without response. Others were unchanged. Insurance shares were steady at late rates. New Zealands being sold at 54/9. There was a good demand for breweries fit firm rates. New Zealands were traded nt 38/-, and more were wanted at oi/lv. Carltons were bid for at 40/-, Staples at 27/6, and Tooths at 41/6. Miscellaneous industrials showed a firming tendency, and. there was a rather better demand for mining shares. BANK OF ADELAIDE Interim Dividend The directors of the Bank of Adelaide, Limited, according to a cable message received yesterday by the Stock Exchange Association, have declared an interim dividend at the rate of 4 per cent, per annum on the paid-up capital for the half-year ended September 25. The dividend is payable oji November 1. Transfer books will be closed from October 19 to November 1, inclusive. The dividend is at the same rate as for last year. Bell Hooper Cromwell Bell Hooper Cromwell Gold Ltd. reports as follows for the week ended Octoln?r 7: The main face drive was advanced 6ft., and as the bottom rose up to the top of the drive the face was stopped and later on a prospecting drive up in the wash will determine the remaining distance to the boundary. No. 2 cross drive E. was advanced 24ft. This bottom is apparently falling away gradually and shows fair gold prospects. No. 2 cross drive W. was completed to W. boundary. A record yarding of fat sheep drawn from the North Island, many parts of the South Island and the Chatham Islands was the outstanding feature at Addington market to-day. There was a consequent sharp decline ou late rates of 3/- to 4/- a head —a severe blow to veudore. Passings were very heavy. Store sheep: An entry of 3000 head. The continued dry weather restricted competition generally, and values were back 1/- a head. Prices were: Extra good three-quarterbred ewe hoggets to 22/6: good, 14/- to 17/3; good wethers. 15/11 to 17/9. Extra good two and fourtooth three-quarterbred wethers to 20/-; good two and four-tooth Romney wethers to 18/1; ordinary s. and f.m. ewes and lambs (all counted). 10/5 to 13/1; inferior, 6/- to 8/-. Spring lambs: A large entry of 420 head. Values were a shade easier. The price per lb was 84d to 9d and the top price was 27/1. Fat sheep: The entry of 7200 head was a record for the period for some years. Values were: Extra prime heavy wethers to 31/4; prime heavy. 27/- to 30/-; medium weight, 23/- to 26/-; ordinary, 19/- to 22/-: light. 14/- to IS/-. JOHNSONVILLE SALE

Prices Generally Easier

Prices generally were slightly easier at the Johnsonville stock sale yesterday, when Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd., and Abraham and Williams, Ltd., offered a good yarding of cattle and sheep. A. good yarding of prime quality bullocks and an extra ftood quality, offering . of cows and heifers were submitted. Prices for bullocks nt the commencement of the sale were on a par with last week s rates, but toward the middle of the sale there was an easing tendency, and at the close prices could be quoted as showing a decline of from 5/- to 7/6 a bead. t’ood prime quality cows and heifers met with a good sale at late rates, but plainer sorts were dull of sale. . The varding of sheep comprised good quality ewes and wethers, the larger proportion of which were shorn sheep. Hoggets and ssi'ing lambs wore penned m smaller numbers than during the last few weeks. There were good entries in all departments at to-day's Burnside market. Approximately 240 fat cattle were penned, and a firm sale resulted, with prices showing a rise of 10/- to 15/- per head on last week's rates for prime heavy bullocks and heifers, and 5/- to 10/- for cows. Extra prime heavy weight bullocks sold to £l3/17/6; prime heavy, £lO to £l2; prime medium, £S to £9/10/-; light prime and unfinished, £6 to £7/10/-; extra good young cows, to £B/17/6; prime heavy, £5 10/- to £7; others, £3/10/- to £5; best heifers, to £B/2/6; medium. £6 to £7; light, £4/10/- to £5/10/-. Dannevirke, October 11. The annual sale of the Aberdeen Angus .Cattle Breeders’ Association at Dannevirke to-day was the best of its kind seen here for some years, outstanding quality being represented. The top price of 150 guineas was pair] for lhe champion of the sale, a Gwavasbred bull. A grade stud bulls averaged 661 guineas, and B grade bulls 26} guineas.
