EIGHT OFFENCES

A long career of petty thefts and deception through both islands ended when in the Police Court to-day James S. McCardlc was sentenced to two
years’ hard labour after admitting eight offences which took place at Stratford. Ohakune, Dannevirke, Christchurch. and Otago Central. The jKiliee stated that Ihe accused deserted his wife at Huutly in 1930, and in April. 1931. at Stratford, disappeared with a saddle and bridle. Last year he collected two cheques for tomatoes, not his. and at Ohakune stole from Mr. Greenslade, who befriended him. a mare and saddle. He was arrested at Ranfurly after taking a horse and 4dwt of gold. All the thefts were mean ones from persons who helped him.
