Miss Elizabeth Helyer - One of the best-kiiown ’"•imary: school teachers in Wellington of former 'generations, Miss Elizabeth Helyer, second daughter of the late Walter Helyer, well-known monumental mason of this city, died on Saturday at 13 Tonks Avenue, Upper Cuba Street, at the age of 77 years. Miss Helyer came to Wellington with her parents from Victoria by way of Dunedin in the early ’sixties, her father setting up in Manners Street as a monumental mason. After a little experience teaching at a Church of England' school, - Miss Helyer joined the staff of Mount Cook Giris’ School in 1880, rising to headmistress. and retiring about 1916. During her period ffs a teacher many thousands of girls passed through her classes, girls who in after years always bore her the greatest respect. She took a lively interest in all matters concerning the welfare of women and girls. She was a foundation member of the Wellington Pioneer Club, and was a life member of the St. John Ambulance Association, a body with which she was connected for more than 30 yearsShe was one of the original members of the Wellington Free Kindergarten, and had worked in the cause of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union since 1892. She had been living in retirement for some considerable time, and had enjoyed good health until five weeks ago. her condition from then until the time of her death being critical. The funeral will leave her late residence at 2.30 p.m. to-day for Karori cemetery. Mrs. F. C. Brookie A well-known and highly esteemed resident of the Bulls, district, Mrs. F. C. 'Brookie, passed away at her residence, Parewanui, last week, after a short Illness. Mrs. Brookie was a member of the well-known Tingey family, of Wanganui, her father being Mr. William Tingey. who emigrated to New Zealand in 1865 in the ship Tibernie. Mr. Tingey subsequently took up land in the Matakohe district. Mrs. Brookie lived for many years at Parewanui, her husband being a wellknown farmer. She maintained interest in various local institutions up to the time of her illness. She leaves her husband, two daughters, Misses Vera and Melba Brookie, and three sons, Messrs. Nelson, Milton, and Douglas Brookie, all of whom live at Parewanui. Mrs. Alice Harland The death occurred at Pahiatua on Friday of Mrs. Alice Harland, of Sedcolo Street, at the age of 71 years, states a “Dominion” Special Service message. The eldest daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. C. F. Gregory, of Sedcolc Street, Pahiatua, the late Mrs. Harland was born at Barnet, Herts. England, where she was married and lived for the greater part of her life. Her husband predeceased her 40 years ago, and 25 years ago she came to New Zealand and settled in Pahiatua, where she hud resided ever since, with the exception of last year, when she macle a trip to the Old Country. The late Mrs. Harland was a staunch member of the Presbyterian Church and its various women’s organisations, and was also a member of the Pahiatua Women’s Institute and W.C.T.U. She is survived by three brothers and two sisters.
