New Zealand Team Wins Tasman Cup ILLNESS OF AUSTRALIANS By Telegraph.—Press Assn. —Copyright. (Received September 1,10.30 p.m.) Melbourne, September 1, The international golf match, New Zealand v. for the Tasman Cup, was commenced to-day. The teams were not selected until the last moment owing to the illness of prominent players. Mrs. Templer, New Zealand, played, though far from fit. In the singles Miss Susie lost to Miss -Oliver- Kay (New Zea-, land), 1 down. Miss O. Lefebvre defeated Miss Betty Gaisford (New Zealand), 1 up. Miss MacLeod defeated Mrs. Dodgshun (New Zealand)* 3 and 2. Miss Joan Hammond defeated Mrs. Templer (New Zealand), 4 and 2. Australia won three games and six points to New Zealand’s one game and two points. Miss Tolhurst was three down to Miss Kay after teq holes, but won three in a row to square the game at the fifteenth' Miss Kay won on the last green. . ... ; ■
Miss Lefebvre was three down at the turn, but put up a great fight to defeat Miss Gaisford on the last green. Miss Kay took about 79 and Miss Top hurst 81. < -
The foursome.s in - the afternoon were sensational,* as Misses Tolhurst, MacLeod and Hammond were compelled to withdraw “owing to illness. Miss Kay and Miss Gaisford defeated Miss Lefebrvre and Mrs. Russell, 2 and 1. This was the only foursome played, making the totals three matches to New Zealand and Australia three. On a count back of the. holes, Australia had eight holes in the singles, and New Zealand one hole, and New Zealand had twelve in the foursomes (one walkover counting 10 and 8). New Zealand thus won the Tasman Cup.
