ROYAL GARDEN PARTY

Many Beautiful Frocks SHORTER SKIRTS AGAIN? (Reuter.—Special to “The Dominion.”) London, July 27. The sun was so brilliant for the /Royal Garden Party this week that women who were lucky enough to have invitations could display their summer dresses in full glory. Over 12,000 people were entertained by their .Majesties in the beautiful grounds of Buckingham Palace. It was the most cosmopolitan party for years. Nearly all the delegates to the World Economic Conference were present. and their womenfolk seemed to have strained every nerve to uphold their national prestige (in dress).. Perhaps the most strikingly beautiful of all were the multi-coloured saris worn by the Indian women —their colours and graceful folds drew ad-, miration from every side. All the dresses were worn to the shoe, and many actually trailed on the ground .. . UH, that is, until the Royal Party entered. Then it was seen that the Queen's dress was ■ quite seven inches from the ground. , Women could hardly believe their eyes, for it was believed that her Majesty preferred afternoon-, dresses which hid the ankles. However, Lady Louis .Mountbatten, who was with the Queen, wore a black-and-white dress which was about 12-13 inches from the ground. Leading fashion experts say that they consider that the Queen’s innovation will mean the death of the long dress for day wear. Her Majesty looked delightfully cool as she walked up and down the lawns, greeting the guests. She wore a dress of deep ivory lace sewn with crystals and shoes and stockings to match. She carried a golden silk sunshade to match her toque.
