INFLICTION OF FINES
Following on Thursday afternoon’s simultaneous police raids on five houses, numbers 103, 120, 130, 134 and 136, Taranaki Street, five Chinese appeared before Mr. E. Page, S.M., in the Police Court yesterday charged with using the respective premises as common gaming-houses, and a number of men—Europeans and Chinese —were charged with being found unlawfully on the premises. All the Chinese were represented by Mr. G. Josephs. After Sub-Inspector Martin had telated the story of the raids, details of which were published in yesterday morning’s “Dominion,” the magistrate decided to enter convictions, in all cases except one, which was dismissed.
Ah Sam and Ah Wong, who had previous convictions, keepers of Nos. 103 and 130, Taranaki Street, were each fined £3O, and Wong Hing, Len Cheng and Wing Lee, keepers of 120, 134 and 136, Taranaki Street, respectively, £25 each. Oswald Gerald Thompson, Gilbert Gillespie Watson, John James Weeds, Ronald Jorey, Erie Bernard Casey, Joseph Regan, were each fined £3 for being unlawfully found on No. 103 Taranaki Street. Arthur Richard Edwards, Frederic]* Backhouse, Frederick John Gooch, Spiro Alexander, John Tonga, Lee On and Law Hee were each fined £3 for being found unlawfully on No. 120 Taranaki Street.
George Wong and Ah Wing were each fined £3, and John Jones £l, for being found unlawfully on No. 130 Taranaki Street. For being found unlawfully on No. 134 Taranaki Street, Henry McKearney was fined £3 and costs.
Gordon Leslie Scott, Herbert Thomas Palmer, Thomas Thompson, George William Hudson, Jeremiah James Foley, Stuart Gordon McColl and Patrick Kelly were each fined £3 and costs for being found unlawfully on No. 136 Taranaki Street.
