Miss Scanlan in Wellington
“There is no depression in Sydney,” said Aliss Nelle 'Scanlan, the New Zealand novelist and journalist, who returned from Australia by the Alakura yesterday. “There was a depression last year, or was it the year before; anyhow, it was some time in the past, something to be remembered like a ghost of the night before.” Generally speaking things in Australia were very bright, and the people were very optimistic and charming. During her visit, Aliss Scanlan met tnanv interesting people. She had a talk with Air. Keith Alurdoch, managing editor of the Melbourne “Herald,” the day before the news of his knighthood was published. She also met Air. Kim Keane, late of “The Dominion,” and now of the “Herald” In Melbourne, and Air. Eric'Baume, of the Sydney “Sun” (Sydney), whose novel "Half-caste” was recently published Just before she left Sydney the agents of Jarrold’s, the publishers, London, rushed down to the Alakura witli the' copy of the jacket of her latest book, "The Tides of Youth,” which continues the Pencarrow saga. This is a bit of sunlit coastline purple cliffs, with green tops jutting into an azure sea, cleverly painted by Air. Nugent Welch, the Wellington, artist Aliss Scanlan will leave for London by the Rotorua on July 7.
