MORE WORK WANTED

Hawke’s Bay Unemployed

“VITALITY BEEN SAPPED” Dominion' Special Service. Napier, June 11. ‘Efforts are being made by the Mayor of Napier, Mr. C. O. Morse, and Mr. W. E. Barnard, M.P., to have relief workers in Hawke's Bay placed on a working schedule similar to that of unemployed in the four main cities, namely, no stand-down week. Mr. Morse has already stated that in view of all things, apart from the general depression and the earthquake disaster, the people of Hawke's Bay are suffering from the mental strain they underwent during and after the earthquake period. “Our vitality has been sapped,” he said, “which warrants extra consideration, particularly as regards foodstuffs, medicines, etc.” He added that if the workers had the present “blind” week cut out. which would mean an increase in the allocation, they would greatly benefit from it. Ultimately, he said, this extra allocation would reflect to the credit of the Consolidated Ftjnd of the country. "We are not asklug for anything more than they are getting In other parts, especially in the main centres, where they do not have a stand-down week, but we do ask. and shall ask, that Hawke’s Bay should be put on au equal basis, at least.”

Both the inayor and the member for the Napier district have interviewed the Minister of Employment (Hon. A. Hamilton), and the deputy-chairman of the Unemployment Board (Mr. J. S. Jessep), who have promised to forward within the next few days a written reply. In response to some questions Mr. Barnard said the Minister did not indicate in which direction his decision would He, but ho did suggest there was every possibility of bls making a grant In favour of unemployed girls and women, among whom distress was particularly acute at the present time.
