AN ECONOMICAL SHIP

Features of the New Fiona The new semi-tanker' Fiona, which was built by the Caledon Shipbuilding and Engineering Co., Ltd., Dundee, Scotland, for the Colonial Sugar Refining Co., Ltd., is now en .route to Sydney, via the Panama Canal and Fiji. This will b h Into the company’s stores at I’iji, and the vessel will then load a cargo of molasses f °Of S '34B4 r tons deadweight capacity, the Fiona embodies the latest features of design. as the result of special investigations into hull form by the builders, who have aimed at a vessel which will show economy in service. The ship is fitted with an Oertz streamline rudder and a special propeller. Economy in the engineroom has been achieved principally by means of super-heating and forced draught feed heaters. Fuel tests showed that, with a service speed of 101 knots, the average coal consumption was 12 tons a day. and with a sea speed of nine knots it would not exceed pine tons a day, which gives an analysis of 1.16 pounds of coal per indicated horse-power, a most economical figure. On trials, the vessel attained 12.4 a knots. Machinery was supplied by the North-Eastern Marine Engineering’ Co., Ltd., AVallsend-on-Tyne.
