Rugby Team Promotions
Sir, —Your Rugby writer, in commenting on the question of which team is most worthy of promotion to the senior first division, makes comments which are open to question. He states: “Oriental, who had not lost a game prior to Saturday, were unexpectedly beaten by Johnsonville. . . . The chances of Oriental must be garded as bright in view of their record.” The reason Oriental had not been beaten till Saturday was that they had not met Johnsonville till then, , and further, the result may have been unexpected to your writer, but not to many other followers of football. . With regard to the actual position, and in view of the fact that the Rugby Union meets to-morrow evening (Tuesday), I trust you will give this letter space, as setting out the comparative records. The teams’ records are:— . points. St. Pat’s Old Boys, 6 wins. 1 loss 12 Johnsonville, 5 wins, 2 losses ...: 10 Oriental, 4 wins, 2 draws, 1 loss .. 10 Varsity, 4 wins, 2 draws, 1 loss .. 10 St. Pat’s are the first team to go up, and the union has to decide which of the other three shall accompany them. The respective records, side by side, are as follow:— Johnsonville. —Versus St. Pats, v. Melrose. 16-3: v. Miramar. 12-5: v. Upper Hutt, 11-3; v, Berhampore, 19-3. ‘ Oriental.—Versus St. Pat’s, 6-0: v. Melrose, 22-5: v. Miramar, 8-8; v. Tinner Hutt. 16-14; v. Berhampore, 15-6. University.—Versus St. Pat’s, 6-11 ; v. Johnsonville boat Oriental 11-7 (three trios to one); Oriental and Varsity drew. 3-nIl; while Varsity heat Johnsonville. 9-8. You will note that Johnsonville’s two losses were by one point each. If the decision were to be made on a points for and against basis. Johnsonville still hold the advantage, the records being:— Pts. for. Avst. Dif. Johnsonville .... 89 43 46 Oriental ....... 77 47 30 University 105 61 44 —I am, etc., < A. M. CARMAN. „ Wellington, June 12.
