OBITUARY

Mr. F. H. Cooke The death occurred at his residence, Fitzherbert Avenue, Palmerston North, on Saturday morning, of Mr. Frank Herbert Cooke, at the age of 71 years, states a “Dominion” Special Service message. Mr. Cooke was a well-known member of the legal profession in Palmerston North, where he had been in practice for the past 43 years. Mr. Cooke had been in indifferent health for some time prior to his demise. He was born in Melbourne, but was educated af Tonbridge School, Kent. In 1879 he came to New Zealand and joined the firm of Messrs. Stewart and Denniston in Dunedin. Admitted as a barrister in 18S4, Mr. Cooke joined Mr. Arthur Southey Baker in Palmerston North. Mr. Cooke later practised with Mr. Bruce Beale in Palmerston North and then on his own account. Ten years ago he was appointed Crown Prosecutor in Palmerston North, and held this position until quite recently, when he was obliged to relinquish his duties on account of his failing health. Mr. Cooke was a former member of the committee and a trustee of the Manawatu Club. He was an enthusiastic sportsman and a prominent member of the Manawatu Golf Club. He was a well-known cricketer in bis younger days and gained representative honours in Otago, Nelson, and Manawatu. Also in his younger days he was a keen and able tennis player. Mr. Cooke was one of those connected with the acquisition and laying out of the sports area adjacent to the Esplanade. He is survived by his widow and two. sons. Mr. I’. B. Cooke, a Wellington solicitor, and Mr. Ralph Cooke, who is at present in England.

Mr. W. H. Dutton The death occurred yesterday of Mr. William Henry Dutton, in his 93rd year. The late Mr. Dutton, who had been living in retirement for some years, was born in Cheshire, England, and came to New Zealand when 21 years of age. His wife, Mrs. Emma Dutton, whom he married in Canterbury, predeceased him. Mr. Dutton is survived by his sou and daughter, Mr. W. W. Dutton, who is well known in the city, and Mrs. E. J. Holmes, of Parliament Street.
