INVASION OF GIANT CRABS

Fishermen at Corner Inlet, Victoria, have become perturbed at an invasion of giant spider crabs, some of which are as much as three feet in diameter. The chief inspector of the Fisheries and Game Department (Mr. Lewis) said that the crabs were eating the fish at the inlet, and were very severely damaging the fishermen’s nets. The crabs resembled the Japanese giant crabs, which reached a diameter of 10 feet. The giant crabs had never been known to enter enclosed waters on the Victorian coast before. Some had been seen in Port. Phillip Bay recently. Mr. Lewis added that they had not been known to attack human beings.
