OLD-AGE PENSIONS
Position With Relation to Unemployment Act An explanation of the position in regard to the payment of the unemployment levy or exemption from payment by old age pensioners is contained in a statement issued by the Unemployment Board. The position with regard to those liable for payment of the levy is that upon reaching the age of 65 years ■they are exempt from payment of the unemployment levy if their income from all sources has not exceeded an average of £2 per week during the three months preceding the due date of an instalment of the levy, and such exemption automatically renders them ineligible for relief. If men of 65 or over apply to the board for permission to continue on relief, the board requires them to first apply for the old age pension. If this pension Is refused they should then apply to the board for permission to become contributors to the Unemployment Fund. A male in receipt of an old age pension ceases to be eligible for any relief under the Unemployment Act. The fact that a wife is in receipt of an old age pension does not, in itself, debar her husband from the benefits of relief work.
