THE RACING WORLD

ALL HUMBUG’S CUP The Tiger Displays Speed RACING AT FOXTON Totalisator Increase for Day (By “The Watcher.”) The annual meeting of the Foxton Racing Club was held on Saturday, the usual midsummer fixture being abandon,ed owing to poor entries. It must have been with some trepidation that the club’s officials decided to go on with a meeting iu midwinter, and the recent spell of wet weather was far from reassuring, but everything turned up trumps. The day, after a very severe frost, was bright and sunny though therO> was a teen breeze from the north. The attendance was very satisfactory. The track, being of sandy soil, recovered quickly from the recent rains and although the morning's frost softened the top a trifle, the going was in first-class order for this time of the year. The racing was keen aud provided good finishes, but some of the form, coming off much heavier tracks, was a bit tricky. The Foxtou Cup was won by the Wanganui-owned and Bulls-trained sprinter All Humbug, who incidentally gave L. G Morris his first success in the event. As Morris had only one other mount, Foreign Queen, on the day, which also won, those who follow him had ample proof of the good percentage he has maintained for the past few' seasons. The Tiger, on the firmer going, was able to give another exhibition of his undoubted brilliance by winning all the way in the Kebbcll Memorial, and Adventus put up a good performance to win the hurdle event. Three favourites only scored in the seven events, and the win of Land Tax in the hack sprint was accompanied by a good double figure dividend, while had Whetuma won the last event instead of running second his dividend would have been sensational. As it was his place backers received an acceptable return. A feature of the betting was the predominance of winning wagers and the total lor the day reached the satisfactory figure of £6llB/10/-, an increase of fSt4/10/- on the £5244 handled on the first day last year in midsummer. There was an official inquiry after the Foxton Cup into the running of the favourite, Takakua. It was adjourned from race to race, and finally adjourned off the course. Favourite Wins Hurdles. Invictus made all the running in the hurdles, aud at one stage looked as if he would give (he favourites, Adventus and Birkbeck, some trouble. Birkbeck took him on first, and coming into the straight Adventus also ran up. Once over the last hurdle Adventus ran on for a comfortable win, and Birkbeck, staying better than Invictus, beat him narrowly for second. The other three starters were outclassed, No Humbug being a very poor fourth, and Capetown fifth. It was a form success for Adventus. Birkbeck jumped very high over his fences. Stylish Maiden Win. Stadium, favourite for the maiden race, had every chance, but was not ' good enough. He jumped away well, but was soon headed off by Arnyril, and later Arctic Region ran up to Arnyril. This pair: led round the turn and into line from Stadium, the rest being well strung out. In the straight Arnyril drew away to win comfortably from Arctic Hegion, who beat Stadium just as easily. En Vidette was further back fourth, with Hawora next, and then a gap to the bunch, headed by Sir Borneo, Thomist, and Toxmiss. Arnyril put up a good performance, for she drew No. 14, and although she jumped away well she had to he ridden early to keep her position. The three placed horses bore out recent form, but improvers among the beaten lot are En Vidette and Ilawera. Surprise by Land Tax, , The Feilding surprise winner, Land Tax, who has since failed to reproduce form, came to light again unexpectedly iu the hack sprint with a clear-cut win. King Peg and Wasteland jumped away best, and were soon joined by Arastar. this trio abreast carrying on the running to the straight from Ebeum and Lackston, with Whetuma moving up. Once iu line Wasteland and Ebeum came on best of the leaders, but suddenly Land Tux swept up from the rear and went on for a decisive win from Ebeum, who was clear of Wasteland. Aroma was fourth, with Whetuma and St. Koger right up, and then a gap to Lackston and Arastar. The winner's performance was distinctly good, and she was well handled by young Pine, for she came from the rear of the field, and beat a couple that had hud every chance. She paid double figures. Aroma came from a long way back also. St. Koger ran a creditable race. Arastar, the straight-out favourite, showed plenty of speed, but did not run on. Whetuma showed promise. All Humbug's Cup. Tn a race run at a moderate pace for a mile. All Humbug, nicely tucked in behind Senegal and Lucky Alice on the rails, was never doing bis best. Consequently as soon ns they came to the business stages of the race he had no difficulty in moving up and beating them all for pace over the last furlong. Lucky Alice had every chance, and the only bother to All Humbug would have come from the favourite, Takakua. He is a hard puller, and going to the front too early at Woodville had beaten him, so this time be was strongly restrained in behind. He came home well, and wns going best at the finish. Hail he made his run just a bit earlier he probably would have won. This error of judgment placed his parly on the judicial carpet, and the inquiry was not concluded on the day. Senegal was forced into the position of pacemaker, at which he beats himself, and in any ease it would seem that a mile is bis present limit. Ail Humbug paid a good price, it being his first trial over a middle distance. As it turned out the race was run to his order. Thrasher Again. Thrasher kept up bis recent consistent record by taking the hack mile from the pacemaker. Palace, in a hard finish. Palace showed plenty of pace and ran one of his best races, but Thrasher finished too solidly for him. The only other that looked likely whs Priscilla Verne, who. like Thrasher, had been handy to Palace throughout, this trio getting all the best of a straggling start. Priscilla Verne ran a somewhat patchy race, running well early, appeariug to be doing her best on the home turn nnd yet finishing very solidly, although unable to make a great deal of impression on the pair that beat iter. Mercian Prince, the win favourite, did not strip well after his Otakl racing and was never going like a possibility |

though he did show speed in the middle stages of the race. The Tiger AH the Way. The Tiger, favourite both ways, soon rushed to the front in the open sevenfurlong event and, using his brilliance effectively. not only put a gap of four or five lengths on his nearest opponents but had the field well strung out and doing their best a long way from homo. Arena, Leisure, Royal Bengal and Habit were closest to him early, but never looked like getting him. Barry gave The Tiger a breather on the turn, where Glcnvane, who had got off poorly, began to put in some good work. Ju the straight Glenvane began to loom up as a decidedly dangerous challenger and Barry got anxious on the favourite more than a hundred yards from the post. The Tiger responded well to his efforts, however, and lasted to win cleverly from Glcnvane, who would have won in a few more strides. Leisure ran on for a fair third, with Arena fourth, followed by Takakua, Habit, Royal Bengal, and Orby’s Choice. The Tiger's brilliance defeated his opponents, 1.281-5 on a winter track bearing eloquent testimony to his speed. Glenvane may have beaten him had be been able to challenge earlier, and his effort for a fresh horse was very good. Takakua appeared again, but never got into the picture, except that he was running on strongly at the end. Favourite for the I-ast. Foreign Queen, a hot straight-out favourite, was ridden with excellent judgment by L. G. Morris to win the concluding event from a big outsider in Whetuma. Foreign Queen began well and dropped in behind Hunting Lodge and Wasteland to the straight, with Ebeum also making a good showing and Whetuma handy. With heads turned for home Foreign Queen soon settled the leaders, but Whetuma came strongly to push her right to the post, There was a very close finish for third money between Ebeum, Hunting Lodge, and Wasteland. Lackston and Arastar next. Foreign Queen won in good style, but Whetuma, who got stopped at the half and again nt the straight entrance, may, with luck, have beaten her. His showing was no surprise after his good effort earlier in the day, but he was neglected on both machines. Ebeum ran another good race and while Hunting Lodge and Wasteland also ran creditably they had every chance. A NEW JUMPER Brother to National Winner NOTES AND COMMENTS The Conference Presidency (By ‘'The Watcher.”) L. Knapp has an addition to bis team in the six-year-old gelding Currajong, whom he took over in Auckland and brought back from the northern meeting with Callamart and I’ango. Currajong has been a disappointment as a fiat racer, but bis transfer to Knapp's stable means that he will be tried as a jumper. This is interesting, as Currajong is a brother to Carinthia (Lueullus —Minsk). He is the next foal, and two years younger. Carinthia, it will be remembered, was no champion on the flat, but when put to hurdling reached the highest class, two of his successes being the Winter Hurdles at Trentham, aud the Grand National Hurdles at Riccarton. President of Conference. The announcement that the president of the New Zealand Racing Conference (Mr. O. S. Watkins) will not seek reelection owing to ill-health, has been received in turf circles with great regret. Mr. Watkins, it is universally recognised, has rendered racing excellent service during a period when bis path lias been anything but a rosy one. In fact, Mr. Watkins's term has seen New Zealand racing pass through what has probably been the most difficult period in its history. His interest ami endeavours have never flagged, and lie will be greatly missed. Several names have beeu mentioned as his likely successor, but the gentlemen mostly named as probables say that they cannot afford the limo. It is by no means essential that the president should be a Wellington resident, though it greatly simplifies the routine if he is within bandy reach of the conference office, and the delegates may. at the annual meeting next month, chose a new president from another district. This Week’s Racing.

The only racing fixture set down for this week is the Hawke's Bay winter meeting on Thursday and Saturday.

Hawke’s Bay Acceptances. Acceptances for the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club’s winter meeting will close to-morrow at 8 p.m. Good Entries.

Napier Park Club officials have every reason to feel satisfied with the entries for the winter meeting next week. Both Bay clubs are loyally supported by district owners and there is also a fair sprinkling of visitors to add interest to the meetings. Well-bred Filly. A. S. Ellis took charge last week ot Mr. J. R. McKenzie’s chestnut filly by Lord Quex from First Class, by All Black from Class, by Wallace. This filly is a chestnut, like most of the other progeny of First Class, and has been done well on her owner’s place. She has been broken and is ready to work. Classic Supported. The Taranaki Stakes at one stage appeared a possibility to join other similar races in disappearing off the racing calendar, but the club finally decided to retain the event. They were rewarded with good entries aud an excellent race. It is pleasing to note that next season's race will be us successful, 41 entries having been received, one more than hist year. Included in the list are Golden Hair, Princess Doreen, Diatomous, Fracas, Inflation and Catalogue. Derby Hope. Randwick trainers are disposed to regard the Magpie colt Winbird as a real Derby hope for next spring. He has had two starts to dnte, winning one of his races, the Havilah Handicap, five furlongs and a half, at Randwick. Orage, his dam, who won a number of sprint races, is descended from Carbine. Royal Sceptre Hurt. During a gallop with Don Jose on Saturday morning, Royal Sceptre struck himself severely at the knee and he is now a very doubtful acceptor for Timaru. His owners apparently have an idea that the Rosetior gelding will develop into a slayer, as be was entered for the big handicap at. the South Canterbury meeting, as well ns for the open sprint, but. in his races he has never given any grounds for that belief. Doing Well. Silver Ring has gone on the right way since R. W. King put him into work again a few weeks ago, and he will soou be ready to take on strenuous tasks, in preparation for spring engagements. lie has been nominated for the leading handicaps in Australia, where he may be given a chance to atone for a disappointing trip last spring. Filly for Sydney. The yearling filly Epigram, by Taper Money—Epitaph, was shipped to Sydney from Wellington Inst week. She looks well after being at Eldcrslie since being sold at Trentham in January. On arrival at Sydney she will joiu J. King’s stable. Jumper Recovered. Royal Limond, who jarred a shoulder while schooling a fortnight ago, is practically right again, and but for injuring himself slightly again in the paddock a few days ago. would have returned to the tracks. His trainer, E. Seoullar, hopes to living him to Trentham for uext mouth's meeting. Exira Racing. Usually the racing season in Auckland concludes with the Auckland Racing Club's winter meeting, but. this year an extra meeting is being held at Ellerslie on July 22, and there is every likelihood that the Rotorua and Bay of Plenty Hunt Club will also bold a meeting before the season closes at the end of July (reports the ‘Tieraid"). A meeting of Hie Auckland District. Committee was held ~n Thursday, when advice was "e--ceived from the Racing Conference that a permit for another day's racing was available for this season only. The comniitl'c recommended that the permit should Iw allotted to the Rotorua and Buy of Plenty Hunt Club for a meeting on the Rotorua racecourse. The Hunt Club intends to apply for Saturday. July 29, as the date of its meeting. The Rotorua and Bay of Plenty Hunt Club has not. previously held a totalisator permit. Coming one. week after the Ellerslie meeting and three weeks before the I’akurangn Hunt meeting, the date asked for should be a very suitable one. The two-year-old colt' Southdown has done a lot of useful work during the last few weeks, with a couple of sprints over a few furlongs (writes “Argus”). With the change in the weather there is no track suitable for galloping him, and J. McAulay is not doing much with him nt present. He will start on serious tasks when the ground becomes firmer. it is probable that he will be given a race nt the Grand National meeting in August, and if he shows the necessary form he may be sent to Australia in the spring, to fulfil Derby engagements.
