Socialism in Spain
Sir, —“Facts,” of Miramar, takes the writer to task concerning the contention that the municipal elections in Spain resulted in a decisive setback to the hollow doctrines of Socialism. “Facts” quotes the London “Daily Herald” (recently banned from Germany). and appears to be under, the illusion that unless one be a Socialist then he or she must he a Conservative, which, of course, is ludicrous. “Facts,” similar to all Socialists, appears, to possess the strange contemplation of his own infallibility, thus depriving him of any power of logical reasoning. For the edification of "Facts’" the writer quotes the following extracts from a leading London paper, and dated by a strange coincidence April 25. The journal mentioned refers to the municipal elections in Spain as follows: “Tired of Socialism. ’ When Spain went red and inaugurated the Socialist idea we wondered how long it would last in a.country so inherently conservative. Spain was the last country to accept tbe doctrine of Socialism as a political cure. The remarkable fact is that nations, like individuals, still believe that Socialism is the way to Utopia." . What is required in this Dominion today is more sober reasoning and fewer persons absorbed in factional strife over theories of government.—l am, ete., T. A. FRASER. Wellington, June 9.
