NEW ANGLERS’ CLUB

Sportsmanship Its Object ETIQUETTE OF THE RIVER To set an example in sportsmanship for fishermen is one of the objects of the Upper Waikato and Tougariro Angling Club, which recently held its first annual meeting. There was an attendance of more than 30 members, Mr. C. A. 'Whitney, of Auckland, presiding. A paper entitled "The Etiquette of the River.” was submitted by a Wellington member and endorsed by the meeting. This paper contained suggestions for the behaviour of members with a view to preventing the irritation caused in the past by lack of courtesy. It was decided to ask the Department of Internal Affairs to rcimpose the bonus of 2/6 for shags, and to provide that angling iu rivers from boats should not be permitted unless the boats are tied to the shore. Another suggestion was that the department should augment the ranging staff by six rangers during the spawning season to prevent the present wholesale poaching of fish. The Governor-General. Lord Bledisloe, forwarded his acceptance of office as patron of the chib. The following officers were elected :—

President, Mr. L. Hanlon (Whangarei) ; vice-presidents, Messrs. G. 1. Barker (Gisborne). R. Leith Begg (Wellington): deputy chairman, Mr. C. A. 'Whitney (Auckland): secretary, Mr. F. E. Thornton ('Wellington) ; auditor, Mr. .1. Hall (’Wellington).
