EDUCATION RESEARCH

Massey College Promises Support PROPOSED COUNCIL Dominion Special Service. Palmerston North, June 9. Support for a scheme to promote a council of educational research in New Zealand was sought in a letter received at a meeting of the Massey Agricultural College Council yesterday from Mr. D. M. Rae (principal of the Auckland Teachers’ Training College), Mr. F. Milner, C.M.G. (president of the Secondary Schools’ Association), and Professor T. A. Hunter (Vice-Chancellor of the University of New Zealand). The council gave its hearty support of the proposal, and signified its readiness to co-operate in the promotion of the council of research. The letter stated that several years ago the Carnegie Corporation of New York had founded a Council of Educational Research in Australia. It had been suggested to the corporation that a similar organisation might be established in New Zealand. A point of great importance to the corporation was that there should be clear evidence that educationalists and education authorities throughout the country were prepared to give such a scheme wholehearted support, and offer facilities for any research that might be instituted and financed by the council. It was to be clearly understood that the committee was but making a preliminary investigation, and by setting up a committee the corporation had not in any way committed itself to the foundation of a research council. That would be uecided upon when the corporation had received the committee’s report. It was stated that in an isolated country like New Zealand, the educational advantages of the work that could be performed by a research council were obvious enough. On all sides there were educational problems awaiting an investigation and solution, and researches carried on by experts lira scientific manner would provide data that might be most valuable for administrative bodies. On the professional side the researches would stimulate interest and lead to better efforts. Of course, any educational foundation under the auspices of the Carnegie Corporation had assure 1 prospects of generous endowment.

The committee elected to report to the Carnegie Corporation on the proposal consists of Messrs. D. M. Rae, F. Milner, and Professor T/A. Hunter.
