AID FOR CHINESE

New Zealand Countrymen WELLINGTON’S SHARE Practical sympathy with their countrymen at home has been shown by Chinese residents In Wellington oy their subscribing considerable sums of money to help China in her war against Japan. It was estimated by a prominent Chinese in Auckland that something between £6OOO and £7OOO had been voluntarily subscribed in New Zealand. It was stated by the office of the Chinese Consulate, Wellington, yesterday that it was probable, if the figures were correct, that half of this had come from Wellington. Chinese associations, it was stated, had been very active in collecting funds for their countrymen, particularly in Wellington, but none of the money had boon remitted through the office of the Consul. There was no means, of course, of ascertaining the actual amount that had been sent from New Zealand, as the remittances had been sent privately, but ’t was fairly safe to say that the sums sent would total a fairly substantial figure.
