FEAR OF THE FAIRIES. Fear of the fairies has delayed an ambitious road-widening plan in Roscommon, Ireland. The proposal involves the cutting down of a number of “love bushes.” which, for hundreds of years, have been regarded as the haunt of the “little people.” ~ , . Terrified bv the misfortune which interference with the bushes would bring the inhabitants have banded together and have forced the road workers to stop.
BIG BEN IN SPLINTS. Big Ben and his tower were recently put into splints. The splints, 15 miles of tubular steel scaffolding, will remain in place for nearly six months, during which period every inch of the tower’s 325 ft. will be examined by workmen for cracks and signs of wear. It is 30 years since the exterior of the clock tower was thoroughly overhauled. Workmen will also wash Big Ben’s face.
