SHIPBOARD ARRESTS
Four Men Before Court CASES REMANDED Arrested on the liner Wanganella on Thursday afternoon James Freest on, steward, aged 39; James Boyne, seaman, aged 32; Henry .Morgan, hairdresser, aged 35; anil Douglas Jack Strath, ship's officer, aged 33, appeared before Mr. E. Page. S.M., in the Police Court yesterday charged witli attempting to export silver over the value of £2, an offence as laid down in the Finance Act. 1932. On the application'of the Crown Prosecutor, Mr.-P. S. K. Macassey, the cases were adjourned until next Tuesday.
Mr. W. E. Leicester appeared , for Freeston, Boyne, and Morgan, and Mr. T. P. McCarthy for Strath. The men were charged following a search carried out ou the motor-ship Wanganella. before her departure for Sydney, on Thursday afternoon. More than £5OO worth of silver was confiscated by the police. Freeston was charged with attempting to export £252/11/- worth of silver. Morgan £2OO worth; Strath £62/12/6 worth; and Boyne £26 worth. Both Mr. Leicester and Mr. McCarthy said they were prepared to proceed with the cases, and asked that, in the event of the Crown Prosecutor’s application for an adjournment being granted, the four defendants be allowed their liberty. Mr. Macassey did not oppose the suggestion, and the four men were each admitted to bail in their own recognisances in the sum of £5O, with similar sureties.
