WELLINGTON'S NEW COUNCIL AND BOARDS

Small Poll Recorded : Labour Makes Slight Gams COMBINED PARTIES’ TICKET HOLDS MAJORITY / Local-body elections were held throughout the Dominion yesterday. Wellington was the only one of the four metropolitan centres in which there was no contest for the Mayoralty, Mr. T. C. A. Hislop having been returned unopposed. At Dunedin, where there were five candidates, the sitting Mayor, Mr. R. S. Black, was defeated by the Rev. E. T. Cox. Mr. D. G. Sullivan was re-elected by a substantial majority at Christchurch, and Mr. G. W. Hutchison was returned at Auckland with a margin of about 400 votes. The apathy which has characterised the Wellington election campaign during the past fortnight was reflected at the ballot-box. The main roll and the supplementary roll contain the names of 54,154 electors, but only about one-fifth of these exercised the franchise. A notable feature was the very large percentage of informal votes, and in the poll for the City Council the number was in the vicinity of 2000. This state of affairs is ascribed to the striking-out system of marking the voting papers. At Auckland, voters marked a cross against the name of the person for whom they desired to record their vote, recent legislation enabling that procedure to be followed in that city.

IN HUTT VALLEY

Sweeping Changes Occur TWO NEW MAYORS , Some sweeping changes have oci eurred in Hutt Valley local bodies as i a result of yesterday’s election. Mr. J. W. Andrews secured a two-to-one ! majority over Mr. A. Mcßain for the Lower Hutt mayoralty, and even more ’ decisive was Mr. D. McKenzie, who was f re-elected Mayor of Petone with a four-to-one majority over his nearest 1 contestant. At Eastbourne, Mr. E. W. Wise scored a victory over the previous mayor, Mr. 8. F. Fisher, by 154 votes. Mr. A. J. McCurdy was reelected Mjiyor of Upper Hutt, defeating his opponent, Mr. P. Robertson, by i the narrow margin of nine votes, and a change may be effected by the recount. The Eastbourne council suffered the most drastic changes, only two of the former council being returned. Five of ■ the Petone council were re-elected, and ■ only three of the Upper Hutt council were returned. Scarcely any change was made in the Lower Hutt council, seven of the nine members of the old council being returned. In the Lower Hutt results, (P.) refers to the Progressive Ticket, (W.) refers to the Workers’ Ticket, and (1.W.) refers to Independent Worker. In the Petone results, (C.) refers to the Civic League Ticket, and (L.) to the Labour Ticket In all cases an asterisk- marks the sitting member. The results are:— UPPER HUTT Mayoralty oMcCurdy, A.
