FINANCIAL LOSS
Unpaid Rates on Abandoned Crown Lands The burning question of the payment of rates on 'abandoned Crown lauds came up for discussion at a recent meeting of the executive of the Farmers’ Union, says a letter to the branches. It was forcibly stressed that many county councils were suffering severe financial loss through no rates being paid on these properties; on the other hand, it. was recognised that the Government would'be unable to pay the £1.000,090 rates owing to its various properties. The question of the liability of the remaining ratepayers in an area for all rates was also discussed. It was decided that a combined committee from the Farmers’ Union and the Counties’ Association should endeavour to find a solution for a problem which was worrying several North Island county councils. The New Zealand Counties’ Association has appointed Messrs. J. S. Connett (New Plymouth), W. Morrison (Maxwell), and C. K. Wilson (Pio Pio) to act on this committee.
