EGMONT FIXTURE Heavy, Continuous Rain POSTPONEMENT MADE Heavy Going Certain To-day By Telegraph.—Krom ‘‘The Watcher.” Hawera, May 3. Rain has fallen heavily throughout the day, and the going will be very heavy for the racing to-morrow. As the rain was very steady and continuous this morning, the Egmont Racing Club had no alternative but to postpone the first day of its winter meeting. As the postponement has been made over Thursday and Saturday, there is a possibility that all the horses may not remain for the full meeting. . , , Gttnpat, a likely runner in the hurdle races, has already gone home. The Aucklanders Substation and Diversion have not made the trip. As the ground will be so heavy there is no possibility of anticipating any Changes in form, and the horses formerly expected to run well may be well backed to-morrow. Additional riding engagements are as follow:— R. Reed: Seatown, Fairway. Roynl Bengal, Merry Way (hack six), and Beacon Fire. H. N. Wiggins: King Peg, Glowlight. Lapstone, and Little Doubt. B. H. Morris: Beaconsfield. W. J. Broughton : Arvada. L. Matheson: Day Lass. S. Tremain: British Columbia, Forceful, Illumihate. and Prince Reno. S. Wright: Willowmere. A. Jenkins: Hard Gold. A. McDonald: Jayson. W. Bowden: Okopua. “DUD” TOTE TICKETS Prosecutions at Stratford At the Stratford races on April 1, No. 4 in the sixth race, March Alone, did not pay a dividend. In the seventh race No. 4, Merry Way, passed the post first and paid a dividend. Two young men who had held two 10/- tickets each on March Alone also held one 10/- ticket each on Merry Way, and when they collected the dividend they presented the four “dud” tickets from the previous race, and received a pay-out. At the Stratford Magistrate’s Court on, Monday, before Mr. W. H. Woodward, S.M., the two men were charged with the theft of £l4/18/-, the property of the Stratford Racing Club. Mr. J. H. Sheat, New Plymouth, appeared for defendants, who pleaded, guilty. The last race was run considerably later than the scheduled time, and dusk was beginning to fall, so that in the rush to pay out the teller had not noticed that four of the tickets were issued on No. 4in the previous race. The sum of £22/7/- had been collected by accused, whereas they were only entitled to collect The surplus amount of £l4 18/- was the amount which they were charged with stealing. A fine of £lO was inflicted on each defendant, while their names were also suppressed. A FINE RECORD Success of the Cults Brothers Chokebore Lodge began this season the right way by winning its first Winter Cup with Fast Passage. It has carried on the cood work most thoroughly, and on Thursday at Washdyke followed up its Easter successes at Riccarton by annexing. half the galloping programme. Incidentally, H. and A. Cutts created a record for this stable by winning three races each for a different owner. For many years only horses to carry the Clifford colours were saddled up by the brothers, or, before them, by their father. Cricket Bat belongs to Sir Charles Clifford, and Rocket to his sister, Mrs. H. B. Douglas, while Silvox is lensed to LieutenantColonel J. Stafford. The Cutts brothers’ record for the season is now 27 wins, 21 seconds and 25 thirds. In prize-money horses trained by them have won £6490, a great return in these days. Races won include the New Zealand and Auckland Cups, C..T.C. Winter Cup. Challenge Stakes, Champagne Stakes, Great Easter Handicap, Dunedin Champagne Stakes, and Publicans’ Handicap.
