Brief Biographies records of service Mr. C. IL Chapman is M.P. for Wellington North, and lias been a member of the City Council for the past ten years. He was a member of the M eliiugton Harbour Board for eight years, and a member of the Technical College Board for nine years. -Mr. Chapman unsuccessfully contested the Mayoralty in 1911, -1925, and 1927. Mr. It. McKeen is M.P. for Wellington South. He was born in Edinburgh, and prior to coming to New Zealand lie was associated with the Labour movement in Scotland. He continued those interests on coming to Wellington, and became a union secretary and a member of the Wellington Labour Representation Committee. Mr. McKeon has been a member of the City Council since 1025. Mr. R. Semple, M.P. for Wellington East, has been a member of the City Council for the last eight years, and has been in the forefront of the Labour ranks for over twenty years. Ho retired temporarily from the field in order to take charge of the co-operative workers who pierced the Orongorougo tunnel for the Wellington City Council in 1917-18. Mr. Semple was member of Parliament for Wellington South in 1918-19, and hits represented Wellington East in the House since 1928. He is one of the City Council's representatives on tlie Fire Board. Mr. W. J. Gautlin, the head of the Ghuznee Street firm which bears his name, was first returned to the City Council at a by-election in .1920. He retired from the council in 1925 in order to make a trip round the world, and in 1927 was re-elected. During the last term he has been the chairman of the legislation and libraries committee, and as such has been a persistent advocate for a new library, He was for two years chairman of the health committee, and is chairman of the Exhibition Grounds Buildings Committee, a member of the Technical College Board, and has been associated with St. Mark's Church as an office-bearer for a number of years.

Mr. W. H. Bennett is the City Couneil's oldest member in both age and length of service to the city. He lias been a member of the City Council for eighteen years without a break, and has been chairman . of the Milk Committee since the retirement from the position of Mr. C. J. B. Norwood. He has also been chairman of the Technical College Board for thirteen years, and is well known on the bowling greens of the city as an old member of the 'Wellington club.

Mr. Will Appleton, who prior Lo his retirement from active business, was the managing director of the Charles Haines Advertising Agency, Ltd., has been active In public life for some years. His career in that respect started when be was returned as member for the old Onslow Borough Council, and when that body amalgamated with the city Mr. Appleton was selected as its representative. He was a member of the Hospital Board from 1923 to 1929. and was elected to the City Council two years ago. He la. a qualified accountant. and is a member of the Mortgagors’ Relief Commission. Mr. 'William Duncan was first returned to the City Council two years ago on the Ratepayers’ Association’s ticket. He is the head of the mercery llrm of Dunean and Mclntosh, of Manners Street. Be was chairman of the Football Association for five years, and, as an enthusiastic yachtsman, Im has been a member of the Port Nicholson Yacht Club for 17 years, the last 13 of which he has been commodore. Mr. Lon McKenzie, who returned from an extended visit to England last year, was formerly a member of the City Council for some twelve years. In 1923 he contested the Mayoralty without success. He is a chemist by profession, and was on one occasion elected president of the New Zealand Pharmaceutical .Society, in addition to which lie was a member of the Pharmacy Board. He was educated at Wellington College, and is a firm supporter of the College Old Boys’ Football and Cricket Clubs.

Mr. Thos. Forsyth, who is at’, accountant Dy profession, with a special knowledge of the drapery trade, has been in publie life for twenty years in Wellington. He has served as chairman of the Education Board for the record term of 16 years, and with one break has been on the City Council since 1919. The one break was when he Was nominated for Mayor, but ultimately stood down for Mr. C. J. B. Norwood, who in 1925 was elected Mayor. He has been chairman of the Works Committee of the City Council for the past two years, and has had n long association with the Clyde Quay School Committee and the Kent, 'retrace Congregational Church. At present Mr. Forsyth is one of the council’s representatives ou the Wellington Fire Board. . . Mr. John Burns was for over twenty years in’the service of the Government Printing Office,.and for a considerable period of that time was the expert printer of stamps. Since his retirement he has conducted a land and estate agency in the city. He has been connected with the City Council since 1910. will) one break. Mr. It. L. Macalister is a barrister and solicitor, of Wellington, lie wtis born in Blenheim in 1890, was educated at the Marlborough College, and in 1908 entered the service of the Public Trust Office in Wellington, while lie completed his legal studies ar Victoria College. In 1911 he was appointed assistant-solicitor to (lie Public Trustee. He served actively during tlie war period, and on its conclusion he left the public service to enter business. Mr. Macalister recently completed a world tour.

.Mr. Martin F. Luckie, barrister and solicitor, had eighteen years’ service on the City Council to his credit when two years ago he conlcsied the Mayoralty, and was defeated. He was, prior to that, chairman of tlie By-laws Committee, and member of other committees. He lias also represented the council on the Technical College Board, the Victoria College Council, and the Fire Board. He was for ninny years chairman of tlie Wellington Cricket Association, and was a good performer in the old days with the Wellington Cricket Club.

Mr. 11. A. Huggins was a scholarship winner at Te Aro Scltuoi. and as ,i member of the Civil. Service lie rose to be Controller of Hie Post Office Savings Bank for the whole of New Zealand, from which position he retired about eight years ago. He has been a member of (he City Council since he retired from the Government service, and was chairman of the staff ami by-laws committee. lie is also a member of the Victoria College Board of Governors. Mr. Huggins was returned as an Independent candidate. Mr. F. Mcadoweroft, who has been returned as an Independent, candidate, has been a member of Ihe City Counci' for the past, ten years, and latterly has been chairman of the reserves committee.
