FATAL INOCULATION

Ten Children Die, Many Seriously 11l PROFESSOR ARRESTED (Received May 2, 7 p.m.) Rome, May 1. Ten children died and a large number are seriously ill at Venice, Milan, Genoa and elsewhere as the result of inoculation with an anti-diphtheria serum prepared at a Naples institute. An official communique states that owing to deplorable negligence a quantity of anti-toxins, after being passed by the laboratory of the health bureau, were subjected to further manipulation and mixed with others. The director, Professor Terni, and an assistant have been arrested and charged with criminal negligence. The affected children are being treated by Italy’s foremost specialists. As the incubation period of the majority of those vaccinated has passed or is passing, it is hoped there will be no more deaths.
