Asserting that they were not being paid for the time wasted while waiting on the Koro Koro job in the rain on Monday, about 150 relief workers waited on the Mayor of Petone, Mr. D. McKenzie, yesterday. The question was referred to Air. W. Nash, M.P., who, it is understood, is communicating with the authorities. Five building permits to the estimated value of £1583 were issued by the Upper Hutt Borough Council during the past fortnight. Keen interest is taken by primary schools in the Hutt Valley in Rugby football, and the Hutt Valley Primary Schools’ Rugby Association hopes to arrange at least one game before the term holidays. Tnterhoiise competition in Rugby football'and basketball at Trentham School forms a popular feature of the winter curriculum, and already interhouse matches have begun. UPPER HUTT CROQUET CLUB There was a good attendance of .members and friends at the official closing ot the Upper Hutt Croquet Club recently. Competitions were held, the winners being: Golf, Mrs. D. Greig: French, Mrs. Duff; hitting the peg. Mrs. Imdlay; lucky number, Miss Watson. The club championship was won by Mrs. A. L. Harper, with Mrs. M . Spackman runner-up, and the handicap singles was also won by Mrs. Harper, with Mrs. G. Benge runner-up. BOARD OF GOVERNORS Hutt Valley High School The majority of members have now been appointed to the Board or Governors of the Hutt Valley High School. The new board will sit for two years from next June. -r c The nominations of Messrs. J. V. Burns, H. Sladden, and C. J. Dowland were received from the Parents Association, and ns there were only three nominations these were duly elected. Captain W. Olphert did not seek re-election, and Mr. O. J. Dowland was appointed in his place. , , The Education Board returned Messrs. J. Stonehouse, P. Robertson, and W. V. Dyer, and the Lower Hutt Borough Council appointed Mr. D. A. Ewen as its representative. . The Government nominees have not vet been appointed, the sitting members being Mr. H. G. Teagle, who is chairman of the Board of Governors, and Mr. J. Kerr. _____ RED CROSS SOCIETY Upper Hutt Branch’s Meeting The annual meeting of the Upper Ilutt branch of the Red Cross .Society was held recently, when the annual report and balance-sheet were read and adopted. , , , The following officers were elected: — President, Dr. F. AV. Kemp: honorary treasurer, Mrs. H. Edwards: honorary secretary, Mrs. M. K. Giblis; honorary assistant secretary, Miss E. Taylor; committee, Mesdames F. AV. Kemp, Harris, Isted, Stroude, Misses D. Avery, 1. Golder, G. Whiteman, AV. Larmer. A. Skou. and Messrs. A. Craig and G. Guthrie. . Mr. Guthrie proposed a vote of thanks to the outgoing committee, which was carried unanimously. At the conclusion of the meeting, a social programme and supper wore provided by junior members of the branch. MAY DAY MEETING Petone Mayor’s Explanation An explanation of why he presided at a May Day meeting at which “Tin* Keil Flag” was sung was given to "The Dominion” yesterday by the Mayor of 1 etonc, Mr. D. McKenzie. . , , “I presided at the meeting in the Labour Hall last Sunday as an impartial citizen,” Mr. McKenzie said, “and at the request of the five sections of thought which were represented, but I most decidedly disassociate myself from any resolution that is unloyal to King or country. To my surprise the discourteous act of singing ‘The Red Flag’ in my presence as Mayor of Petone and indulged in nt the close of the meeting. “During my term of office ns mayor, continued Air. McKenzie, “I have never refused to preside at any gathering, providing it was respectable. I presided at the meeting in an unbiased and impartial manner, although I certainly did not agree with the opinions which were voiced.” SCHOOL COMMITTEES Further Election Results Further elections of school committees iu the Hutt A'alley are as follow:— Trentham. About 30 householders were, present at the annual meeting of the Trentham School Committee, when Air. A. Thomas presided. Great interest was taken in the circular from the School Committees’ Association, which dealt with matters relating to the exclusion of five-year-old children, primary capitation, and intermediate schools. ; .
