DOES THE PACE KILL?

Some Notable Exceptions LIVES OF HARD WORKERS (Reuter—Letter to “The Dominion.”) By all the laws of logic people who live treinendous|y active lives, engaged in work imposing, a heavy strain, on them, ought to “wear out” more quickI ly than others. But they do not. Look at George Robev, our greatest comedian. He is 63 now. But after 40 years on the stage—and you do have to work in a theatre —his skin is clear, his eyes are bright, and his energy is as great as ever. In all his life George Robey has never missed a performance through illness. He says it is "just commonsense” which keeps him well. “After 40 take care of yourself, especially in the matter of eatiing. It doesn’t matter so much what you drink.” That is his advice. All the same, it seems Hint more people would have found out the secret of staying young if it were as simple as that. Another of the people who will not grow old is Mr. Ralph D. Blumenfeld. one of the greatest journalists of this generation. 1 have just attended a lunch given in his honour by the Institute of Journalists, to mark his recent retirement from being actively engaged in I journalism. I This retirement is rather deceptive. I for Mr. Blumenfeld admits that since | lie "retired into active life” —to use | his own words—he has been so busy I that he has not known whether it was Monday or Friday. Mr. Blumenfeld is continually working on his pet project, the building of the new "Company of Newspapermakers.” an institution intended to benefit newspaper workers, and he still writes. He is 69. yet to quote Sir Emsley Carr, president of the Institute of Journalists, "after lifty years of daily activity he is just as young, just as ■ alive, just as full of ideas as when he came to London."
